on july 14th last year at sfo, this is what 13 flight attendants say they saw on the united airlines plane they were about to board for work. a flight headed for hong kong. the words bye-bye, and two faces drawn in oily residue on the tail cone. 30 feet above the ground. >> the flight attendants believed that this was a threat to the aircraft. and in fact united addressed it initially as a security issue by having someone take a lift and go up 30 feet and look into the compartment on the plane in this area. they determined there was nothing there. and concluded that the plane was safe to go. >> reporter: the flight attendants refused to fly unless the more than 300 passengers were taken off the plane, and the boeing 747 was thoroughly served for explosives. supervisors ordered them to fly. they refused and ultimately united fired them for insubordination. yesterday the attendants filed this complaint against united with the federal occupational safety and health administration office in san francisco. they contend they're protected as whistleblowers for reporting security threats and

the message was found last july on a 747 set to depart from sfo to hong kong.its tail near the aircraft. one face was happy and the other had a menacing expression on it. the flight attendants felt it was a security threat. according to a complaint filed with the u.s. safety and health administration they refused to fly when united would not deplane passengers and conduct a security screening of the aircraft. the 13 flight attendants were fired for insubordination. >> they did what they are supposed to do. we are told when you are flying if you see something say something and be extra alert. it sounds like they were doing just that and watching out for the passengers. they definitely should not have lost their jobs for it, so -- >> reporter: united airlines is defending itself and says a security sweep was done before the drawings were discovered and additional security checks were done after. the airline maintains it investigated appropriately and determined there was no credible threat. a spokesperson says the pilots, mechanics and safety employees deemed the
