kari hall tracking it for us. we have new changes this morning to the forecast because we are seeing a slow down in the storm system and that means that the rain will last longer into your thursday and then take a look at the deep packets of tropical moisture extending offshore. look at all those clouds well to the west of us and with this we have to wait for all of that to move into the bay area before it clears. it's going to take several hours. as we continue to see the rain moving in. at times pockets of heavy rain and starting to get a break into sonoma county. a downpour in marin county. we can tell by the bright yellow indicating a more intense downpour. it will be moving off towards the east. lighter in palo alto but still coming down and san jose had a bit of a break, but it's starting to close back in on downtown san jose moving from santa clara off towards the east. we are also seeing that rain as well in parts of the south bay and then for the east bay, fremont, rain is fairly light but it's about to g

meteorologist kari hall spear heading our coverage. kari? >> we are starting out with a lot of rain. if initially comes with a cluster of showers out well to cold front we are seeing to the north of us. rain that continues for the north bay. as we get a closer look, it's kind of lifting to the north and we're starting to see it wrapping up with just mostly cloudy skies for parts of marin county. southern sonoma county as well as napa county and much of solano county as well. we've seen light, spotty activity for parts of the peninsula and over towards the east bay. this is what we can expect throughout the rest of the afternoon with the focus of the heavy rain on the north bay where we will have the flash flood watching going into effect starting at 4:00 this afternoon. between now and early tomorrow, we'll have a potential of getting 1 to 3 inches of rain. as we look at the timeline, still going to see times of some scattered rain and then when we start to see the yellows and the reds, that indicates the most intense rain along with the gus

kari is predicting rainfall totals that can make trouble fo folks if they're not prepared.s sanchez joins us with what folks are trying to do to avert some of that flooding. hi kris. >> reporter: hi laura, if you live in a flood-prone area, label the of a sandxd and burla bag is a very low tech, but very effective solution at diverting water away from your home. were here at the transportation yard and we foundjf this man wh lives in the east san jose foothills to divert that water away from his home there in the foothills. he is a little too camera-shy for a proper interview, but he did tell me that after a few worrisome winters, he decided to come out and get those sandbags early. he says they work. we found another one stopped upx ready to go. and the santa clara valley water district has a number of stations like these around the south bay from san jose to palo alto for folks who need them. i put a link up on my facebook page that you might want to save even if you don't need the sandbags this time around because it is just the beginning of winter. the water district us

kari joins us now. now, this is going to be a kind of sit and hover and pour over the bay area kind of storm. >> yeah, it has slowed down. we will continue to see the rain rolling through throughout the rest of the day. at times the rain gets heavy and then becomes a little lighter with a few more breaks. as we take a look at how much rain we've already measured check out northwest of guerneville over 3 inches of rain there, some new updated rainfall totals just in. petaluma had 2.24. in san francisco measuring over an inch. in pacifica starting to get closer to 2 inches when we have already had more than 2 inches in lafayette. getting a look at napa. two inches of lane there, kentfield an inch and a half, oakland an inch and three-quarters. walnut creek over an inch of rain there. we've seen the rain moving through hayward a little bit more recently. more rain in antioch so i will check out that total as well. it will add up as we go through the day. i will have more in a few minutes. mike is tracking

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking this storm. kari, looks like another one coming our way. >> yeah, this is a fairly weak system moving in and it will be very hit or miss. in some spots we see sunshine, other areas we see the clouds. every now and then those clouds are just enough to drop some light rain across the bay area. this is the first in a series of three storm systems i'll be tracking as we go throughout the week. the center of low pressure still to the north of us and some of the rain has been cons administrated over the bay area's north of san francisco while we did have have a quick passing shower over san jose. we're not seeing a lot going on right here now but we will start to tap into some deeper moisture as we go through the day that could bring in more widespread rain for areas north of the golden gate bridge. and then we'll start to see the radar filling in just a bit as we go through the day with this system being a fairly weak one when you consider that we do have some heavier and more widespread rain on the w

kari. >> yes, we do. we are going to have some wet weather in san francisco, oakland and to the north, that's where the rain will be. san jose, don't expect a lot. it's going to be warmer there. the result, we will see the high temperatures up to 68 degrees. san francisco, soggy, showers moving in later this morning. then, it will clear out for tomorrow. the next round of rain will be much heavier, moving in between wednesday afternoon and early thursday continuing into thursday afternoon. now, we are looking at all week long in the bay area, times of rain and cooler temperatures. i'm going to focus on the weekend, coming up in seven minutes. that's coming up. mike is tracking an oil tanker now in san jose? >> an alert in my mind a tanker on highway 101. i'm moving away showing the sensors. they are looking great, including northbound 101. the oakland road onramp. that worries of approaching at freeway speed. the tanker is mostly off the shoulder. it is moving well off 101 and 85. typical spots for slowin

let )s go straight to meteorologist kari hall. kari -- what )s the rest of the day look like? suddenly the rain starts coming down, then it stops. rainbow pops out, we'll get some sunshine and then it starts raining again. that's what we're seeing here on the radar. and there's still a lot of moisture streaming into the bay area, so a chance of rain will continue as we go in through the afternoon as well. we just had some rain clearing downtown san jose. moving into east san jose and also into the hills. well, that will linger for a few more minutes as we are seeing more rain right behind that moving through the santa cruz mountains. and this is moving off towards the north and east. this will move back into the city. tri-valley, it's raining now in livermore, pleasanton, rain wrapping up there and we've seen dry conditions just to the north, but hit or miss showers also in parts of the north bay just to the east of napa. now, and then there are more rain around rhoner park to petaluma, and that'll move over towards there. a lot of rain off and on throughout the day. there wil

let's get to kari for the forecast. kari? >> all clear skies as we look at the temperatures today. for san francisco, up to 64 degrees. it's going to be really nice. then, by tomorrow, the rain starts to move in especially during the afternoon. off and on showers thursday, then wrapped up on friday. inland, today is the warmest day of the week, up to 69 degrees, gusty winds tomorrow. one dry day for the weekend. we will talk about that weekend forecast and events going on, coming up in seven minutes. now mike has better news for the east shore freeway. >> better news because the crash has been cleared and no major injuries for the motorcycle rider. six or seven vehicles involved. a note for safety. we have recovery, but it's jammed up from highway 4 through san pablo. now all these folks are headed to the bay bridge. expect a build for the berkeley curve as well. the rest of the bay, a standard tuesday here. a build in hayward, and south bay northbound route. a quick look at palo alto. we have a big volume of traffic coming up. the willow off ramp is closed as the commute is kickin
