chief meteorologist bill martin is tracking the conditions now in the weather sister. >> reporter: we'vey of these this year. because high pressure has been owning the west coast. we are dry, way below average for rain and snow and we continue with these spare the air nights. we continue with mild days. these were the highs from today. highs tomorrow are going to be just a little bit cooler than that or about the same. no big changes. what you will notice overnight, very chilly temperatures, 32 in santa rosa. 32 in napa. and these cool temperatures or cold temperatures or low numbers are indicative of that high pressure. all the cool air sinks and the valley air gets bad because of particulates. when you get a lot of wind or you get a high inversion, it lets that stuff mix out. but this time of year our boundary layer, basically the area that we breathe in is very short in terms of depth. the forecast then as the system remains out in the pacific, they are big and powerful. all that is doing is generating big surf along the coast. if it was a big system out across the bay that never real

. >>> our chief meteorologist bill martin has been tracking the swells as they head towards the bay area. you say the waves are big but getting bigger? >> yeah. shots from hawaii last night, the swell came through the islands, 40 feet over there day before yesterday. those swells take a couple days to get here. they will arrive tonight. they are just showing up now. 14-foot swells here. 14 feet in 15 second intervals. the biggest swell will be here by early tomorrow morning and that is when we could see 30- foot waves. my concern is in the morning, 9:00 a.m., there is a 6.2 high tide. that sabeefy high tide. you com-- that is a beefy high tide. the great highway, just about here, this is where they are having the trouble, the lake and right here is where the most problems are. there could be issues there. may might have to close the great highway. today, 15 feet. by friday they come up into 25 feet, even bigger. erosion concerns and the rip currents nasty. so high surf advisory goes into effect. i will be back and we will talk about your forecast ask the surf as well. -- and the surf as

it has been cold and we keep talking about rain and our chief meteorologist bill martin is here. >> everything changing around. you can feel it outside. noticed it this weekend. clouds, fog and wind. we have seen environmental clues that things are changing around. high clouds yesterday as a weak weather system passed by and dropped cold air. it has now settled. today's highs in the 50s. low 50s. not upper 60s or mid-60s but low 50s. tonight we will see maybe a little bit of patchy frost for sure. the real story is temperatures inland. below freezing by quite a bit. hard freeze in some areas. forecast overnight lows, 22 napa. hard freeze -- you will see a hard freeze in the north bay, inland valleys, it is below freezing temperatures for more than a few hours. hard freeze in the north bay valleys and parts of the inland bay valley and bay, livermore and clayton, that will cause you problems with your pipes. if you have pipes that are exposed, wrap them with a towel, you have been through this before. you don't want to crack your pipes. pvc will crack easily. regular house pipes can break too.

our chief meteorologist bill martin is here. what is going on. >> recognize, there is two kinds of spare the airs. spare the air day in the summer month. that occurs because of the reaction of the sun and exhaust from cars. that is the summer months. in the winter months they are talking about particulate matter, wood burning smoke. with high pressure sitting over the top of us and no rain, as you know, this type of weather pattern, with no rain or winds is conducive to the particulate. kuper hino right here -- cupertino, this is surrounded by the hills to the west. you can the hills by bolder creek. the particulate, when people burn wood, the particulate burns in here. there is not strong winds so it sits in the valleys. reno, denver has a problem with this. in this case there is no way for the wind to blow it out. as long as the high pressure stays we will deal with more spare the air night and more days ahead. i will see you back here with the five-day forecast in the weather segment. >> the weather is cooperating tonight for

community leaders will stage a demonstration in annapolis against the governor's bill to legalize same-sex marriage. governor martin o'malley made it clear that passing the bill is on the top of his agenda for the legislative session in the 2012 general assembly. a similar bill was passed in the senate last year but stalled in the house. this year, the governor says the bill contains more language to protect the rights of religious institutions that don't want to recognize same-sex marriage. the governor addressed a national conference on gay and lesbian equality that was in baltimore this weekend and says compassion, understanding, and justice are needed in the debate over same-sex marriage. >> it is the dignity of a free and diverse people who at the end of the day all want the same thing for their children -- for their children to be able to live in a loving and a caring and a stable home that is protected equally under the law. >> tomorrow, the senate judicial proceedings committee will hold a hearing on this year's bill to legalize same-sex marriage. reporting live in the newsroom, kim dacey, wbal-tv 11 news.
