our bob be redell is breaking down the massive amount of water. meteorologist kari hall with an outlook on more rain set to arrive very soon. >>> we are going to see that rain coming in by late morning but this next storm system coming in on the heels of all of that heavy rain over the weekend and even though this is weaker, we do continue our microclimate weather alert because we could see some of those impacts once again today with more flooding and also some downed trees. what to expect over the next 24 hours as you head out the door it is a cloudy morning but you don't want to forget the umbrella because the rain will be beginning in parts of the north bay at about 10:00 and in all we could see a quarter to three-quarters of an inch of rain possible. we're getting ready for another big storm coming in on wednesday that could bring an additional 4 to 6 inches of rainfall. we're seeing the rain. it may arrive in san jose by about noon and then we see the rain off and on throughout the day with some pockets of heavy rain even changing over to sno

drivers are seeing an impact, especially on 17 where bob redell was. >> exactly. i think we have the still shots of that same section. you see over on the right side, that is the entire southbound side of 17. bob showed us a little progress there, but this is an important note. i want to show you the map. you see a closer shot of all the debris. the entire hillside basically came down with trees, debris, mud, rocks. that's why south 17 is still closed. bob showed one lane that had been cleared by the caltrans crews. a reminder, in case you only saw the video, it's still closed to anyone except those emergency crews, southbound 17 still closed for the foreseeable future. there was some talk of hoping to get one lane, perhaps, cleared later on today. but they don't even have a time, an estimate there. southbound 17 closed, northbound 17 restricted at times, very slow, and likely for more inclement weather we may have other issues. only one direction is open right now. as we look at the rest of the bay, as an alternate to 17, you have to go to 101. you come across the

this is bob redell live here in danville. we're along el capitan drive this is a neighborhood that flooded heavily this past saturday during that storm, and the good thing is i can hear the storm drains are working right now. the concern is will those storm drains back up like they did on saturday. you can see perhaps in the early morning sun light, still mud on the road, thick mud on the sidewalks, and you have homes like that one right there where they still have sandbags. they clearly have them up now along with a tarp in front of the garage doors and entrances because they're concerned about what the storm could bring. further up north in contra costa county we spoke with the fire protection district yesterday and they were telling us they are prepared for the loss of human life. their one concern is flooding, and that's why they have their swift boat water rescue teams on the ready in case there is that kind of flooding and they have to go out and find people. for more on this weather, kari? >>> we've been tracking with

"today in the bay's" bob redell live for us in half moon bay. >> bob, the suspect will go before a judge for the first time later today. >> reporter: you are correct. good morning, laura and marcus. chunli zhao is the suspect in this mass shooting. he will be arraigned in redwood city on charges in connection with this shooting that killed five men, two women and put another man in the hospital. we're here off the main drag in downtown half moon bay where you can see people have left flowers and candles in honor of the victims. the sheriff's office says zhao knew the people he allegedly shot and they believe, the sheriff's office, believes this was an incident of work place violence. he work at both farms targeted in the shootings. zhao accused the victims of picking on him for years. they say zhao gunned down two workers before going to the trailers and killing a co-worker's wife and shooting two more co-workers. that includes the lone survivor. investigators say zhao then drove to the nearby mushroom farm on cabrillo highway and killed a married couple he had worked with before along w

our bob redell is live in danville with the current conditions there. vianey arana timing out the commute, and meteorologist kari hall is tracking the storm. we'll start with kari. >>> we're looking at storm ranger where we can see the rain is already moving through all of the bay area as you wake up and head out this morning. some of the heaviest rain is right now falling in parts of the north bay and san francisco. it's moving to oakland and danville as well pushing into the east bay. as we get a closer look, the radar is lit up with the rain getting a lot heavier in parts of the tri-valley. it's just now starting to move in to san jose with lighter rain. we'll see it continuing to get heavier as we go throughout the rest of the morning. as we zoom out, we can see all of the storm that has to work through the bay area, this atmospheric river, with that tap of the tropical moisture extending all the way over to hawaii. that will enhance the rainfall. but as the center of the storm gets closer, we will see those winds increasing as we go into this eveni

first, let's turn to nbc bay area's bob redell about the news conference this morning. what's the latest from investigators, bob? >> reporter: this morning the san mateo county sheriff said the suspect knew the people he allegedly shot and killed, and without going into details, says this points to an instance of workplace violence. the sheriff says the suspect, 66-year-old chin chunli zhao, purchased the semiautomatic gun he used to shoot eight people yesterday at the mountain mushroom farm where zhou worked. all were adults of asian or hispanic origin. seven of them, including one woman, died from their wounds and another man is out of surgery and stable. the sheriff's office says that he drove his car to the substation after the shooting, a deputy recognized his vehicle based on the description that was sent out earlier. he had the seat back and was lying in the front seat. he did not actively surrender. he had to be ordered out of his car at gunpoint. the sheriff's office says he is cooperating. >> so as far as his criminal history, we're not releasing that informati

nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live from fremont. last saturday's storm did a number on that hill. >> reporter: it did. and you can see why, scott, people who live here in fremont are a little worried. this hill behind their homes, as you can see, has already started to slide a little bit. one neighbor tells us she watched the mud pour down that hillside during the last major rainstorm that pounded us here in the bay area. it didn't damage any of these homes but did come against some of the back yard retaining walls. since then, homeowners have placed sandbags on the hillside. one neighbor constructed a wood barrier. there's concern about what will happen during the next atmospheric river expected to hit in a couple of days. >> is there anything you can do about it? >> no. sandbags. >> you don't like sandbags so much? >> that's right. you can't stop mother nature, right? >> well, you seem kind of okay with it, i guess. >> i wasn't the other day, but it's a nice, sunny day. >> when you have a mass of earth up there and you have slope

bob redell reports all of us can expect higher energy bills. >> reporter: the price of natural gas has doubled according to pg&e, homeowners are using more natural gas this winter because of the temperatures we're experiencing. they're colder than normal, so there's more demand, tighter supply, which has caused the price to spike. in san carlos, eric vaughn tells me he spent several hundred dollars to heat his home. he sets the thermostat at 64 degrees, runs a space heater every now and then to avoid another monster bill. >> it's about double. it's normally under $300 for our townhome but $600. winters like this, when we see bills like this, it does change the priorities we have in a given month. >> reporter: the utility reform network turn is pushing for the public utility commission to change how and when pg&e raises rates. it wants pg&e to spread the costs throughout the year instead of dumping them on consumers at one time during the wintertime. on thursday, the cpuc will decide whether or not to move up its annual climate credit to help customers on next month's bill, which could

nbc bay area's bob redell joining us live from mill valley. let's talk about the conditions there. how sit looking now? >> reporter: well, we did have a downpour within the past half hour, but right now it's giving us a break. we're outside goodman building supply here in mill valley along 101. this is a low-lying area that floods during heavy rain and you can see they've been ready. this has happened numerous times before. they've got well over 100 sandbags stacked along the front and along the storefront to keep water out if and when they do come again. here is the happy guy throwing popcorn on his head. >> happy new year. >> reporter: happy new year, man. even though mill valley offers free sand and bags, people are coming to goodman and paying for the sandbags because they're already filled. if you go to the city, you've got to fill them on your own. here they're ready to go. this woman paid almost $13 for two 50-pound bags and they're going to use this to divert the rain around a clogged drain in front of their garage. >> i tried to clean it out. i thought i did a good job, bu

no injuries reported here. >>> today in the bay's bob redell is live in redwood city. are you seeing out there? >> reporter: good morning, scott and laura. we are hearing reports of minor flooding, pockets of flooding throughout the bay area. take this, for example, we're in, as you mentioned, redwood city, and i would call this very minor flooding and it's a large puddle outside a couple homes off the westbound 84 off-ramp through el camino. next door, if you pan to the right, there are no sandbags but it doesn't look like the water got into the house, maybe into the garage but not into the house. this, by the way, does look like an area that regularly floods when there's heavy rain. i thought i saw a storm drain over there that is trying to suck in some of the water. last night's storm produced wind gusts that took down trees like this large eucalyptus that fell on a three-story building. it's our understanding that the building has been red tagged, which means nobody is allowed inside. and then the flooding downtown oakland, a user named @6storms tweeted this out an

"today in the bay's" bob redell live for us in half moon bay. >> bob, the suspect is going before a judge first time later today. >> reporter: correct. later this afternoon that suspect, chunli zhao, will go before a judge at the main courthouse on charges in connection with the mass shootings. we're here on the main drag of half moon bay where you can see people are honoring the memory of the seven people murdered by leaving flowers and candles. they say zhao, 66 years old, knew the people he allegedly shot and believe this is an incident of work place violence. he worked at both farms in the shooting. zhao accused the victims of, quote, picking on him for years. our sources told us zhao gunned down two co-workers at the first farm off highway 92 before going to the trailers and killing a co-worker's wife and shooting two more co-workers including the lone survivor. investigators say zhao drove to a nearby mushroom farm on cabrillo highway. after all that he drove to the sheriff's substation where he was arrested. >> our biggest problem in our country is gun violence. that is one that de

. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell live along the guadalupe river in san jose. bob, they're trying to move the unhoused people out. they live just way too close to the rising waterways. >> reporter: they do. good morning to you, scott and laura. right now we're not seeing too much of the rain. we are feeling a lot of wind and it's a brisk wind. we are along the guadalupe river in the northern part of san jose, and the people, the city and the outreach groups are concerned about people who live along this riverway and coyote creek which also runs through san jose. forecasts from the national weather service warn the prolonged flooding could bring water to businesses and neighborhoods around san jose, so yesterday city staff and outreach groups went around to possible flooding hot spots to tell neighbors about the number of resources. the staff from many cities have been urging the unhoused who live near creeks to evacuate. we spoke with a man living along coyote creek who says he got the message. >> everything is all muddy because everything here is dirt. i've bee

. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in daly city this morning. bob, we make the assumption it's weather but maybe not. >> reporter: not clear yet. i did speak with the water department and they said it is possible because of the rains this weekend that it eroded the soil underneath the water main that was right there and it cause that had pipe to break, but he said they won't know until they get down in there. yes, it was a broken water main. we're at castle street and abbott avenue t. eroded underneath the street corner and you see that 2001 toyota sequoia sunk in. the pipe burst around 1:00 a.m. you can see the water rushing out from underneath that suv. then about an hour later the ground gave in and that suv nosed down and sunk. a tow truck company already came by and said they can't pull it out. daly city police are out trying to figure out who to call next. they were able to wake up the owner of the suv. >> trying to get me to come out to look at my car and by the time i come out, what? my car is in the sinkhole. >> reporter: the owner tells

we do have team coverage on the weather and our bob redell is at niles canyon where a road closure is behind me is still shut down. i just spoke to a caltrans worker and he is hoping to have this road reopened by tonight if not tomorrow. it was shut down because of the enormous amount of rain. you can see there's the alameda creek. its levels are down right now, but they were up much higher on saturday during that storm. and during that storm, it actually caused a sinkhole along highway 84 through niles canyon, so that's why it's taking so long for that road to reopen. north of us in the hills of castro valley, redwood road is closed for several miles because of a large landslide. alameda county firefighters tweeted out this photo taking your mile marker 8.2. you can see a huge chunk of the road is missing, was taken out by rain over the weekend. and here's new video into our newsroom from the peninsula, where there's a road closure at old country road and harbor boulevard in belmont, again, due to flooding. the rain is definitely filling up our local reservoirs. this is one near san

. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is in fremont. this is one of many neighborhoods dealing with a mudslide. >> reporter: correct. good morning to you, laura and scott. we're on canyon heights and pickering in fremont. i know it's dark out, but if you can see maybe a couple of dark lines, dark shadows, that is a part of this hill here that has started to shift and slide down and send mud into the streets below. a viewer sent us this video in the daylight. it gives you a better sense of what's going on. several places the grass and soil has started to slide away from the rest of the hill. it's not clear how much a threat this poses to the homes nearby. the cleanup continues across the bay in san mateo county, but it's difficult for people who live in the laurel hood neighborhood, the city of san mateo, that is, where there's been a lot of run-off from the hillside. residents tell us this is the worst they've seen it when it comes to storms. >> filling sandbags for hours and hours but you have to do what you have to do to protect your

our bob redell will have more, but here is kari. >>> we're starting out this morning with more cloudstorm off the coast, but it's starting to look like we'll see much lighter rainfall compared to what we've seen recently. so as we take a live look outside in san jose, we are seeing the dry conditions for now through 8:00 and then at 10:00 we start to see some spotty showers moving in. it does get heavier at times as we go throughout the day just off and on. make sure you're keeping the heavier jacket and umbrella handy as we see the rain coming in. let's take it hour by hour. we see the rain spreading across parts of the bay area and where we see the yellows and oranges that's really intense rainfall that will continue to move in near mendocino and sonoma counties. some of that heavy rain makes it into marin at about 1:00 this afternoon and much of the rest of the bay area including the east bay at 4:00 to 5:00 today. so at times really heavy rain, but
