emma wright joins us live from the mobile news tracker with an update on the conditions, emma? >> reporter: well, we were just in durham last half hour. then we decided to make our way over here to chapel hill. in durham we were seeing snow in the middle of the road, chapel hill from what we've seen so far, orange county, things are looking a little bit better. we do see snow there along the sides of one of these secondary roads. but we're not seeing the slush and the a little bit of ice that we were seeing in the middle of some secondary roads in durham. we're going to show you some video of what some of those secondary roads looked like earlier in the week. there was thick patches of ice, a lot of that snow had been compacted down and then thawed and melted and thawed and melted and really become some thick patches of ice. luckily, the warm weather that alyssa has been talking about seems to have melted most of that so when you're headed out and about this morning after that two-hour delay, you want to keep that in mind. we want to see what your neighborhood looks like, so if

emma wright is checking out the conditions in wake county. how are things looking this morning out there? >> reporter: we've been driving around all morning. and things are hit and miss. and the roads that are cleared, but the roads messy, they are really slick. we pulled over to a parking lot to show what you we're talking about this is what a lot of the secondary roads look like. it looks like they attempted to plow and scrape the snow but it froze and it created a giant sheet of ice. it is slick out here. if you got going way too fast, would you have an accident that is not something you want to do in the parking lot or the roads either. so something to remember when you're out and about this morning. we have seen some d.o.t. trucks out salting and sanding. but it will take a lot of salt and sand to clear up something like this but it will probably not happen by the time the morning commute ends. so take it slow. emma wright, wncn news. >>> looking ahead today, federal officers in washington d.c. will remain closed today. this is after thi

and emma wright has been riding around the past couple days looking at conditions. how is it looking now, emma? >> reporter: it is a little icy here and there. and we're in wake forest where there's a water main break on 98. we'll show you some video of what it looked like yesterday when the schools decided they classes. you can see some really thick ice and snow still there on some of the back roads that is what made the schools really classes today. that means that everything that starts at the normal time starts three hours later. and they say that school will end on time and all activities are going to resume as normal. and we talked with some parents and they say that the schools made the calls that they did and they don't want to be out driving in dangerous conditions. >> we did not have anybody to float the streets or anything like that. so we basically had to wait for the ice melted. i didn't move the car till yesterday. and then i didn't go that far, coming out from my subdivision to the other roads is still icy. >> reporter: we just got an update from the w

emma wright has been checking out the conditions all morning and joins us live with an update. how is it looking, emma? checking out road conditions early this morning, around 4:30. that's when things were really looking slick. around 9:00 when things started to warm up, it started to look better. we are on mill brook, an area that's usually a little slick. it was earlier today, but you can see it is clear except for a few piles of snow on the edge of the road. we will show you some video we shot an hour or two hours ago in durham and the snow was really thick. we were trying to get uphill and we were slipping and sliding all around the ice and snow that had compacted to several inches of thick ice on the road. we talked with drivers who say they were out and about yesterday and this morning. they say yesterday was worse but this morning was treacherous too. they definitely took it slow when they were on their way to work. >> still pretty rough in the certain intersections where the and plowed snow into corners. in parking lots or intersections, it's rough around the corners. >>

emma wright is in the studio with details about a sendoff for the super bowl bound carolina panthers and a look at your morning commute. >>> but right now getting your day starting with the forecast with meteorologist alyssa corfont. good morning. >> good morning, guys, and good morning to you at home as well. we're looking at clear skies this morning, that on our satellite radar composite, a nice change from where we were 24 hours ago. with those clearer skies come colder temperatures, right now at freezing in roxboro, 35 in raleigh, 34 in clayton, the upper 30s around fayetteville and clinton. that's really the biggest change from yesterday morning because if you remember, temperatures hills yesterday at this time. here's a look at your fast forecast, a little bit of fog south of the triangle this morning, 35 at 8:00 a.m., 45 at noon, plenty of sunshine and then we're looking at highs in the 50s, 51 is where i think will be normal, 52, i don't think you'll get closer than that in your afternoon. that's the latest look in your forecast, to more in just a little bit, let's go ahead a

. >>> emma wright is check out the roads and how the d.o.t. plans to keep us safe on the roads during the winter weather tomorrow. but first we want to get to meteorologist alyssa corfont who has your forecast. >>> good morning. just down from the national whether service, we have a -- weather service, we have a winter storm warning that will go into effect at midnight. this includes wake county, durham and pretty much from wake north and west and the line extends down to more and lee county. if our on the southeastern portions of that line, you're still under a winter weather advisory as we speak. let's take a look at the big picture. it doesn't look like much right now. but there's an area of low pressure developing in texas and louisiana. and that will be moving into our area, bringing all of that moisture with it. and it collides with the cold air and that is it when we could have the winter storm develop tomorrow. in the meantime, this morning, not as cold as where we have been. 28 in durham, 27 in raleigh, 31 in littleton, fayetteville a

and emma wright joins us with more on 24 from wake county. >> reporter: the d.o.t. has been preparing for this since tuesday. there are strips of white that solution that they put down before this snows to hopefully free prevent the snow from sticking tomorrow. north carolina roads are ready for winter. >> when they have dry conditions like yesterday and today, we try to get as many as the major interstates covered as possible. >> reporter: and in raleigh, d.o.t. trucks are filling up and heading out. treating the interstates first and then the secondary roads. >> i guess the brine works. >> reporter: and they are trying to get ahead of friday's storm that could bring snow and ice, a recipe for a messy morning commute. >> when i get the opportunity to stay in, i will stay in. >> reporter: if you cannot stay in, take it slow. but the best way to prepare for the storm is to just stay home, if you can. staying home is not an option for everyone. highway patrol said they are encouraging everyone to give morning when they are on the roads. and governor mccrory's press co

we have our crew, emma wright in person isn't. i'm sure she'll be keeping us totals. let's talk about ice. this is going to be critical causing power outages. we all know these temperatures very cold. it's going to be crucial to stay warm. the bulls eye of ice off to our from where we were thinking yesterday, siler industry, chatham county, orange county, person county, a half inch of ice possible. for the majority of wake county, about a quarter inch possible. the ice is only part of the battle because the winds are going to pick up. wind busts could be approaching that in itself is impressive. combine that with the weight of the snow and ice and it's going to be treacherous. 33 our high in raleigh, 32 in durham. i do expect them to stay at that freezing mark which means they are dealing with sleet, freezing rain, snow for the majority of the day. fayetteville you should reach 36. now with tonight most of this wintery mix is going to taper off. the catch, anything that's left, all of that moisture is going to change over to snow. we're going to be dropping into the u

emma wright joins us live from the mobile news tracker with an update how things are looking. emma? >> reporter: so we're dropping around durham county and we are seeing sxhoe ice -- snow and ice on the roads, mot too much. we'll show you where in one of the subdivisions, there's snow and slush, ems right here -- especially right here in the intersections. that's where we're seeing the most of it. the primary roads in durham county, those are fine. i hi that -- think that warm weather and the sun we saw, that really helped melt that. these back roads shaded with a where we're seeing a little bit of snow. we'll show you some video of what these secondary durham county roads looked like over the past couple of days. they were really, really slushy. some places had some real thick ice on the roads, some snow that kind of compacted down and made for real slick driving conditions, durham county schools were closed monday and thursday, they were on that two hour delay, if you're headed out to school, you do want to keep in mind these secondary roads may have a little bit of slush. we do h

this is northwest of the triangle. >> and that is where we find emma wright. she's been there all day long. it looks like you got some snow coming right now. how is it looking? >> reporter: it is really coming down. we've been saying that all morning. this morning and it has been coming down here all morning. we had some big fluffy flakes and now we have the hard pellets, ice. i'll show it on my jacket. you see is bouncing off. that is what we're dealing with right now and a little more treacherous than the fluffy stuff that we had before we probably had two, two and a half inches out here right now. if is a grainy type of snow and not good for making a snowman and bad for the roads this is highway 501. it is a mess. we saw a couple d.o.t. trucks come through and put some so the on the road. they have not done my plowing, road. not as many cars as we on a normal friday morning. but the people driving around seem to be taking it slow. roads are not great. they've seen worse. but luckily we have not seeing some of the ice like they are seeing in the sand hills.

wncn's emma wright joins us live from the salt barn in raleigh with more of the plan, emma? >> reporter: governor mccrory has ordered the state to start preparing for any possible dangerous travel conditions. we're out here at one of the state maintenance yards, still pretty dark but we're told they're going to start mibsing up -- mixing up the brine condition and putting it on the roads, however the state doesn't expect any significant snow or isolator this week but it's important to be prepared and prepare to stay warm. they say avoid using alternative heating sources like the oven or a grill that heats your house. duke energy says they see a very cold winter months and they say some customers can be hit with high bills. they say they do have programs in place to help people out. >> we work with agencies across the state, local nonprofits and government agencies to help distribute the funds to our customers who are in need. >> reporter: you can find more information about those duke heating assistance programs on our website wncn.com, as for the naint yard here, we're -- m
