i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. a man is dead this morning after a bizarre police chase that ended with a man shot to death on a stranger's roof. it happened around 3:00 this morning in antioch. that is where christie smith joins us. >> reporter: good morning. it is strange and neighbors are starting to wake up this morning seeing all of this outside their front door wondering what is going on. some told us that they heard helicopters flying overhead and heard gun fire. it was an officer-involved shooting of a man who made it up to a rooftop of one of the neighbors here and that man was shot and killed up on that roof. in what started as a domestic dispute call around 11:15 last night and a pursuit with a toddler along for the ride. it started on sycamore across 4 and police say a man left a home and had a gun, hopped in a car and refused to stop. they say he rammed two patrol cars, then crashed, got out and started hopping fences, climbed up on a roof. >> sounded like clapping, boom, boom, boom. there was like put

i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning. we can tell you there is a major problem solved in oakland now, we now know what's causing major glitches in the city's multi-million-dollar police radio system. that's good news for everybody. christie smith is live in observe land and christie, the city is pointing its finger straight at at&t. >> reporter: that's right. oakland is saying after looking into this for a while they think they have got at any the problem nailed down that it's at&t's 2g network. sometimes the radios don't even work in the basement of old p.d.'s head quarter. the radios don't work. for patrol officers they say that this radio system is really putting them in danger. officers have been unable to connect with dispatchers or talk with each other on the radio. the radios often don't work in buildings around town. oakland confirmed the issue. here is one example after close call days ago. >> the vehicle they were chasing crashed, he called in a car accident, then the suspect and fought the officers, the officer

marla tellez has more on the investigation. it's a tragic story, marla. >> another shooting after the shooting in colorado action it's horrific. it's almost 24 hours since terror struck at the sikh temple in oak creek, wisconsin. still that gunman has yet to be identified but officials say his name could be released as early as this morning. officials only saying at this point he is a white man in his 40s, possibly linked to the white supremacy movement. shortly after the shooting officials searched this home here, not far from the temple where they think the suspect lived. authorities say the shooting happened in between services, seven people in all were killed. that includes the gunman who was shot and killed by a police officer. three more are in critical condition today including the officer who first approached the shooter. the good news is he is expected to survive. also among the injured, an uncle to a bay area man who belongs to a sikh temple in san jose. members there telling us they are often mistaken for muslims and

i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. happening right now a car has gone off the road and right into a dorm near the cal campus up in berkeley. christie smith is live at that scene. we're hearing that driver has been detained this morning. >> reporter: that's exactly right. investigators are still trying to figure out why that driver lost control in the first place, and wanted to say that students are all okay. they are back in their dorms but what a night, what a wake up. a driver jumped the curb and george washingtoned into a g ee into a gas meter. students on the way out could smell gas. the line was ruptured. this was around 2:00 in the morning. some students were up in the lounge area getting to know each other when they heard a boom sound. it got hectic after that with everyone trying to figure out what was going on. one student is a freshman who just got to uc berkeley. >> the fire alarm wrapping. people were saying get out, get out. it was really scary. i was screaming because i didn't know what was going on. then

i'm jon kelley. >> i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon.tinue to follow breaking news out of san francisco, two people are dead after an early morning house fire in the city's excelsior district. christie smith is live with what else we have just learned. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a real tragedy this morning, two people have died in a house fire, firefighters telling us that one of the victims is still inside right now. the real challenge for firefighters, though, the house was absolutely packed, so full they say, they had a hard time getting to one of the victims inside on the second floor. neighbors tell us that two elderly men live in the home. here's what we know. firefighters got the alarm overnight and they found smoke and flames pouring from a second story front window. they also, though, had another challenge. they say that a live wire from the house next door was down making it difficult for them to approach the front door here on vienna street. they were able to get to one victim but firefighters say the garage and

i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we begin with breaking news this morning in san francisco. an apartment building is evacuated in the tender loin after what police call suspicious items discovered inside. the building on is 600 block of jones street between geary and o'farrell. bob redell got to the scene. what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, the bomb squad has been out here for the past few hours. what they have done, shut down this block, the 600 block of jon jones. and just a moment ago we heard one of the officers with the bomb squad yell fire in the hole fire in the hole and we heard a popping sound as in something was being activated. that's how the police describe. it's quite possible they destroyed whatever the item was that was suspicious that led them out here to begin with. we haven't gotten response from the bomb squad yet as to what happened because this, as i said, just happened a few moments ago so it's possible that they have destroyed whatever that suspicious device was and maybe they would be cl

. >>> good morning, i'm marla tellez. jon kelley has the morning off. >>> breaking news. san jose place have now arrested a suspect in connection with a homicide that happened inside a safeway earlier this week. within the last 30 minutes, police announced the arrest of this man here. he is identified as 27-year-old michael howard. howard is accused of stabbing and killing 24-year-old juan miguel moones on monday night. he stopped at the saveway in east san jose on his way home from work. his body found in one of the aisles in the center of the store. they say he was a third-year accounting student at san jose state and had no known gang ties. investigators don't know the motive for the killing. last night, the victim's families and friends and some who didn't know him, lit candles and prayed for him. >> today, unfortunately, was our cousin. but tomorrow could be someone else's child. you know? it could be someone else's family member and, you know, it needs to come to an end and it needs to stop. >> there have been 32 homicide this year in san jose. it tomorrow, san jose

. >> and i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. a developing story in san francisco where police have given the all clear to re-enter an apartment building evacuated because of a suspicious device. the building located on the 600 block of jones street, this is outside the tenderloin, was evacuated for a few hours after those suspicious items were found in the basement. 75 people were woken up and forced out on the street while officers went in for a closer look. the bomb squad was called in eventually after officers determined the items may be hazardous. >> there are 12 to 15 sections of pipe that had been cut and capped and contained a substance, i don't know the specific substance but the bomb squad working with the hazmat team determined that the contents were not explosive or hazardous. >> several streets were shut down. the streets have just been reopened. >> 6:01. san jose chief chris moore will hold a meeting with the gang task force to talk about with options for dealing with the recent rash of violence. christie smith live
