kris. >> hi there. this is a really sad crash. emergency crews are right now removing the van or suv that was stuck under that big rig. the roadway here will reopen within the next 15 to 30 minutes or so. that is theood . of this crash t now is that the driver of the big rig that was hit said he was pulled over on the shoulder, had gotten sleepy and was sleeping in his rig when he felt the impact of someone driving into him it hit the big rig with such force it was stuck underneath. we now know three people died on exact and another has very serious injuries. the investigation into what happened is going to take a while. but -- >> okay. it looks like we lost her microphone there. the investigation will continue. several lanes of interstate 80 shut down this morning as police continue to investigate. the chp, of courses on the scene as well. we'll check in with mike, he's got a look. >> 4:13 for you right now. we have more for you on "today in the bay" including kari tracking this thursday forecast. >> this storm is moving out. the

kris sanchez is out there. kris, half the freeway eastbound 580 is blocked. what do you have out there? >> well, hi there, mike. as you mentioned two lanes are blocked here at 580 eastbound. we're just under 98 avenue off-ramp. this is a vehicle still on the roadway right now. they are waiting for the coroner to show up because this is, in fact, a deadly crash. one woman who was a passenger in this car died in this crash. another young man who was at the wheel is at the hospital with major injuries including burns. that's because when the suv went off the embankment and slammed into a tree, it burst into flames. again, one person died and one person was transported to the hospital. the suv is going to be towed as evidence because chp is trying to figure out what happened here. now, earlier this morning in emeryville, three people died when the suv they were in slammed into the big rig parked on the shoulder. i-80 approaching bay bridge toll plaza at the curb. another person at the hospital with major injuries in that crash. the big rig driver told chp that he

kris sanchez is out there, and kris, be careful. you had live power lines down. >> reporter: there were live power lines down valley boulevard. we heard the wood chippers there, we think they are chopping down that tree and from this vantage point, even though we're far back the high power lines down across the roadway as well. let's show you the map here, ygnacio valley road between north civic drive and walnut boulevard that is closed and right now it sounds like it could be up to 14 more hours before this is resolved. this is video from right after that tree fell down. it's dark because a tree brought down the power lines, the ground was electrified, as mike, you mentioned, creating major hazard for drivers and first responders. pg&e is here on scene. by the way, this is a look at the pg&e outage map right now, that area in orange is the affected outage, and that is about 500 customers who are in the dark, even right now. we did talk with someone at pg&e, and they say they are working to restore that power to everybody right now.

kris? >> reporter: well hi there, marcus and laura. we need every single drop in our hot and dry summer months, but when it all comes at a very fast pace at the same time, it can put a little strain on some of our reservoirs. we're at lexington reservoir this morning, the third largest in valley water district's system. the uvas is the one that is overflowing at this point, even before the rains are rolling in. the thousand oaks campground was evacuated as a precaution about a week or so ago, though the water district says there was no flooding imminent. there was a bridge that was going to make things difficult for passing through. by daylight, folks have been seeing this side sight at vasona reservoirs, water spillage is normal as they try to make room. almaden nearing capacity. here is where the ten reservoirs stand, va sona 95% plus. lexington 74%. stevens creek one of the smaller ones at 80%. almaden one of the small ones is at 89%. so if you see some of those spillways active at the reservoir near where you live, don't be alarmed

kris sanchez joins us live from the san jose dmv this morning. what's the problem this time, kris? >>> this latest glitch affects people who didn't procrastinate, renewed their driver's license as soon as they got their renewal in the mail. here is what happened. they tried to get ahead of a backlog sending out renewal notices earlier than usual, 5 to 3530 days early. the problem is they can only accept renewals 115 days or less before stiration. some folks renewed early, paid the fees, and now the system shows no record of that. if you got a notice to renew your license between november and january, this could be you. the dmv said people with birthdays of february 25th would be the expiration date on your license, that's the earliest folks would be impacted. sacramento dmv uncovered this glitch and could affect tens of thousands of californians. there's an internal review under way to get to the bottom of this problem. this is in addition to a review by governor newsom and an audit by department of finance of it's completely different from the problem we saw with real ids and moto

kris sanchez joins us live in san jose with a look at what this is all about. kris?> reporter: hi there, laura. this is the driver's license that's issued to an undocumented immigrant that is intended to allow people to drive legally and also get insurance, thereby making the roadways safer for everybody. that was the theory, when assembly bill 60 was passed, detention."13 citizenship or our sister nation nbc san diego talked with a man pulled over by immigration and customs age and now knows that those i.c.e. officers had access to his driver's license information because that was the picture they used to identify him. now a deputy director for the dmv explained that the agency does not keep a separate database for a.b. 60 licenses and thus they are searchable, just like all the other dmv's records and accessible by outside agencies through the department of justice. she also adds the searchable information does not include immigration status. a spokesperson for i.c.e., immigration customs enforcement, told nbc san diego i.c.e. cannot access the dmv's database direc

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in los gatos this morning. kris?> reporter: hi there, laura. this morning the cold is the story for us out here at lexington reservoir. we know by tonight we could be talking about reservoirs that are spilling over their banks. this is lexington reservoir, this is not one of the ones that's under risk of overflowing but uvas reservoir down in morgan hill is. let's show you video of the last time we were there. it was at capacity, even before the rains are starting to roll in tonight. the thousand trails campground was evacuated as a precaution in the last week or so, though the flooding, the water districts said there's no imminent flooding. there was concern there would be a bridge impassable. almaden reservoir is nearing capacity, and as is vasona. by daylight, people have been seeing that sight water over the spillway, which the santa clara valley water district says is normal ahead of the storm. that may happen at almaden, one of the smaller reservoirs in the ten-reservoir system. here is where some of the valley

kris sanchez joins us live from mineta, san jose.so are worried about this. >> reporter: this is something that the faa is trying to get to the bottom of. they are wondering whether or not the way that southwest weighs all of the baggage that goes underneath the plane is accurate enough so that a pilot knows what kind of weight they're working with in the event of an emergency. in just the last hour, i did get a statement from southwest airlines, which confirms that the faa has an open letter of investigation. the federal aviation administration confirmed this year-long investigation to the "wall street journal" as well. so here is the deal. southwest depends on a manual count of bags by ground crews. you've probably seen them counting those bags from your window seat. then they calculate using an average bag weight before loading. the faa estimates that, in about a third of flights, that could lead to uneven weight distribution between the plane's front and rear cargo bays, which then could impact pilot response in an engine emergen

kris sanchez is live for us this morning out there, monitoring that area there and kris, what are things looking like this morning for you out there? >> reporter: we can hear that coyote creek, which is actually a river, rushing here behind us but only about half way to flood stage, so that is the good news. however, we know that the forecast is calling for anywhere between one to two feet with this latest round of rain, and the next one that's coming in, and already we know that it's been a problem. yesterday san jose fire had to rescue a man stuck on a little island in that creek. the man rescued him and then homeless advocates went into the creekbed where a lot of folks camp to warn them the water could rise quickly. this is one reason why, this is video we got just yesterday around the noon hour of water roaring out of anderson reservoir. valley water is making room for incoming rain, and anderson feeds coyote creek. now, the readings are looking like this, right now, that blue line on your screen is a river level as of 5:30 this morning, so in the last hour, it was at five feet. any

kris?one thing that won't surprise you, marcus, is californians say they are feeling crushed by the cost of living and by the housing crisis gripping the entire state. these are results from the new quinnipiac university polls. one of the most respected polls out there. if you look at your screen, 46% of the voters who were followed say they cannot afford to live here, particularly true for voters 18 to 34 years old so some of our younger millenial voters. 77% say the says it has a housing crisis, and 54% say that legal pot has been good for the state of california. 62% oppose that border wall we heard about just in the state of the union address last night once again. the republicans who are a political minority here in california do support that border wall overwhelmingly. 70% -- 76% of californians polled say immigration is good for the friday, and most support a path to citizenship, although an interesting note here is that a third say that the state overreaches in helping undocumented

kris sanchez is live at the scene since about 8:00 this morning. what is going on now? >> reporter: well, laura and marcus, we are going on five and a half hours here of road closures and heavy police presence here in campbell. you can see that there are plenty of campbell police officers down there. they're also getting assistance from los gatos and santa clara police. i saw an atf officer out here, as well. what we know is that this man was out in the parking lot and had some sort of confrontation with an employee of that denny's restaurant there in the distance. and no -- there was no argument. however, according to the police captain, something happened and at that point the suspect pulled out a gun and then went into the restaurant. at that point, because it was so early in the morning, 5:30 or so, there were about half a dozen people inside. campbell police arrived on scene, they were able to get some folks out safely. now it appears that the gunman is the only one inside. at this point. they have the police negotiators out here. they're trying to talk with him an
