. >> nbc's stephanie chuang is live with the latest. >> reporter: the man and officer exchanged fire around 9:00 this morning cht i want to point you where it happened down the 1500 block of 37th avenue where you see some officers gathered there. again, no officers hurt but one man is at a local trauma center. down the stretch on a driveway is where police say that despondent suicidal man was. our chopper shows a pretty good view. back left passenger door open, windows appeared shattered possibly by gunfire. also the trunk popped open. and blood also visible on this driveway. right now there were a lot of unanswered questions. who was the man, how badly hurt is he, if he in fact lives at that home? police say they did find a loaded handgun at the scene. they also say there were specially trained crisis intervention officers and s.w.a.t. as well to try and de-escalate the situation. unfortunately they say the man started shooting any way. >> yeah, in a case like this we deploy as many people -- as many officers as possible hoping to mediate the scene rather than to have to use force l

stephanie chuang live outside that market. we're learning more about what investigators say was inside that bag. >> reporter: that's right, laura. found here at the harvest market. it's not what you want to heark but hazmat teams came knowing there was some sort of hazardous material. turns out after testing, it was human waste combined with some other substances. there were initial reports that there was also a chemical odor coming out of this bag that was thrown here. police and fire and hazmat crews responding just around after 5:00 last night. investigators say a man walked into a market with the bag, threw it at the meat counter where it "explode and splashed." police had to evacuate many customers and employees for safety precautions as the hazmat team started to run tests. >> turned out to be a combination of some just product -- human waste protect and a few other things that sounds like there was a disgruntled person of some sort that had come in and thrown against the meat counter. >> hazmat teams had to conduct a fi

"today in the bay" stephanie chuang joining us live in san ramon where she spoke to folks in the middle of the quake swarm. >> they are all taking it in stride this morning. because they were sleeping and these are very small earthquakes. the most important thing is large number of small earthquakes does not mean a large, damaging quake. we are talk about a record number of earthquakes in this area. let's take a look at our nbc bay area seismograph that captured a lot of the activity overnight. some magnitude 3.0 and that is the level where people start to feel shaking. the earthquake swarm under san ramon started on october 13th. since then, the usgs says there has been more than 400 quakes detected here. we spoke with one expert who said the biggest swarm was 1980 in alamo. now, nbc bay area earthquake map from the usgs shows the activit. experts say there is a 72% chance of at least one magnitude 6.7 or greater quake causing widespread damage. somewhere in the bay area in the next 30 years. the likely of it happening along the calaveras fault is small at 7%. people taking it in strid
